November 21st, 2009 Meet me at Dragonmeet, though I am not a dragon

I’ll be at Dragonmeet on 28 November at Kensington Town Hall.

I’m looking forward to it. If I get the time I might even try a game.

I’m on a panel discussing the impact of RPGs on fantasy novels.

I’d love to hear opinions if anyone’s got any.

Mark

*g* Long time, no speak, Mark.

Was rather hoping to be at Dragonmeet tomorrow but long distance runaround and finances not up to the trip. Would’ve been amusing to run Phil (later M.A.R.) Barker’s original mss. from 1949(?)/50 past you for fun since you’re a bit of a Tekumelaniac, no? ;)

Have fun (or hope you had fun); either is good. :)

Yeah, modern context on that is probably going to give a difference answer to a mid-70s p.o.v.
Still have EGG’s Monster Manual gift to Andre Norton to help encourage Quag Keep along, kicking around here somewhere and quite imagine /that/ degree of linking nowadays.

The whole expedition fantasy ethos which is more commonly bannered under Tolkienesque and derivative certain does fit in better on a post-D&D timeframe, no doubt, with a few exceptions just about creeping in before that ball got rolling big time; Lin Carter’s World End series, for example.
Since then things have gone around the feedback and/or parodying (choose whichever sounds less derogatory *g*) loop several times, no?

    Cheers,
    David/harami2000

p.s. Never did have Leper as a PC class. ;)

(heh; amend prev. & discard ^^
Bad headcold = bad for grammar, etc.)

How are you? Well I hope.
The panel went well, which I’ll blog on later.
Very good reception from gamers and played my first game in 20 years. Good fun, managed to make a bid to control entire party and then get killed. Nothing changes. I have to point out that bidding for control of the whole party was my mission objective, not some vestige of power gaming.
Check out my new blog for the fantasy novel I’ve got coming out next year

As I’ve said before, you can take the boy out of Mordor but you can’t take Mordor out of the boy.

Thanks, Mark & somewhat better here more recently: has been an “interesting” few years, no doubt.
Went to try to find those earlier blogs I’d replied to, but possibly pruned now? Time passes too quickly, regardless…

Excellent to hear that went well and kudos for getting back into gaming again, regardless of “outcome”! (Goal = “having fun”, anyhow?). Sounds like a blast and not to worry; those con tourneys have been more deadly than your average mod ever since ToH, it seems, even if it’s still difficult to beat a typical 600% Paranoia TPK rate. :)
I won’t even dare to ask if you had to play 4e (not Ackerman) or somesuch in order to take part: albeit there’s still /plenty/ scope for roleplaying these days even without the sieve-like rules which rather /necessitated/ that BITD.

Had already been nudging a bit behind the scenes elsewhere re. your novel: apologies for not hollering over support and congrats here more recently, but has been interesting to see how things have developed for you in the past year or so. Well done for that hard work coming to fruition! Will be looking forward to reading. :)
Feel free to give a holler over, too, if you’ve a multi-million pound movie deal stitched up (…meanwhile back in the real world, eh? ;) and are tempted to “repay any debt” to the hobby by opening an international RPG museum: I still have the original dungeons where Gary’s Mordenkainen first adventured forth and plenty more besides, all of which our wonderful credit card companies in their generosity (having somewhat forgotten about low interest rates worldwide) are looking to be taking away soonish!

Keep busy & Keep on enjoying! :)
    Kind regards,
    David.

p.s. So much for gender equality these days? Or maybe “wifwolf” doesn’t sound quite right once, far less for a whole book, even if that’s linguistically correct Anglo-Saxon? :p
